Call for Applications for the Use of NMR Facility

Next deadline for applications: June 5, 2009
(FY 2009 first round)

FY 2009 first round applications of "Non-Proprietary Trial Use" has been finished.
The "Proprietary Use" and the "Non-Proprietary Use" are still accepting.

1.Overview

RIKEN accepts applications from academic and corporate researchers to use the NMR Facility and the NMR Structural Analysis Pipeline for preparation of NMR samples and tertiary structure determination.

From FY 2002 to 2006, RIKEN used the NMR Facility to determine more than 300 protein structures annually under the National Project on Protein Structural and Functional Analyses (also known as the Protein 3000 Project) under the direction of Japan’s Ministry of Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

Since FY 2007, RIKEN has taken the technologies, research facilities, trained personnel resources, and analytical systems gained during the Protein 3000 Project—particularly the world-class NMR Structural Analysis Pipeline—and made them available to the public with the aim of contributing to the future development of life science research.

Part of the expenditures for open use of the facility are provided by the MEXT Open Advanced Research Facilities Initiative*.

*About the Open Advanced Research Facilities Initiative

This initiative is the successor to MEXT’s Open Advanced Facilities Initiative for Innovation (Strategic Use by Industry) program. The initiative’s mission is to promote an independent approach and flexible operation. MEXT supports expenditures at national state-of-the-art research facilities by researchers in academic and industrial fields, thus providing opportunities for them to conduct superior research.

Both RIKEN and Yokohama City University [which share the same location in Yokohama] had their proposals accepted for use of their NMR facilities under the Open Advanced Research Facilities Initiative. RIKEN works in collaboration with the university to select research applications, and announce research results.
